Santana

Not for Sale
Private Collection

This is my take on Santana’s first album cover from the 70’s. I found the cross hatch design a challenge on a piece this size. If you look into the piece you will see seven figures of faces in top portion above the beard, some just profiles including where the wiskers ar protruding. After you find the faces, look at the african face just above the teeth. The outline of the mouth creates the shoulders and arms folded in front of her. The breasts are behind the bottom fangs. The beard represents the skirt of the african woman and under the skirt are the legs. In all, this creates the face of the lion. Many years after I did this piece, I met the artist that created the album cover. He was a neighbor that was viewing my art one day and was in total shock when he saw this piece on my wall. He ran home and got his original file and sketches to show to me. This piece was so close to his that it was hard to tell them apart and seemed to come from the same artist., This was an erie experience and one to definitely remember. Santana is still around and are still great!

  2. Yes, I did…isn’t that amazing? He was a real mess too. He left paintings in his apartment when he moved. I had 4 of them for years then they got lost along the way. Don’t ask em his name now…too many years ago for my brain.
