Hardwood Panels & The Masters
Canvas is perceived by many people to be the best support for painting,
but hardwood should not be shunned and in fact some would argue that it’s a
superior support as it’s rigid, not flexible like canvas.
Many of the paintings that have survived the best from previous centuries are
painted on wood panels. The surface being more rigid tends for less cracking of the paint.
Old Masters of the 14th & 15th centuries such as Michelangelo, Picasso and Van Gogh used
wood panels primed with a chalk like material for their work as there was no canvas.
The Mona Lisa painted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1503-06 survives today in almost perfect condition and with little cracking.
Although they are quite time consuming to construct, I have chosen to
use Custom Canvas Covered Hardwood Panels for my work.
