Still Life Food SeriesIt seems that the subject of lemons in a Blue Bowl is one that every artist paints at one time or the other so I decided to try one just for the fun of it and to take it out of the realm of things. To create a field of activity and interest.

A Play on Texture: Lemons have their own grain and smooth texture. I wanted to create deep shadows and heavy texture so I used a heavily gessoed canvas hardwood panel and gessoed areas to accomplish an extreme texture.click for larger view

The Hardwood Canvas Panel is one 5/8 inch deep and looks great with all the sides with a continued finish to blend with the colors of the piece. The back panel is cradled for stability and has a wire installed. No frame necessary and ready to hang. click for larger view

We use peppers in a lot of our cooking, especially reds as they just add a wonderful touch of color..and flavor. Healthy food for my fans today! You can’t always have sweets and donuts!

Still Life Food SeriesI had a bag of plums that broke open on the counter under just the light from the stove hood.
Grabbed the camera and took natural light shots, just wanting to catch the darkness of the shadows and the purple and slight blue hues of the plums. Plums are so smooth that I wanted to see what reflections I could get from the opposite, heavy textured gesso canvas on which this is painted.

Still Life / Food SeriesMushrooms fascinate me. I picked these from the woods and stood them up, layed them down and changed positions until I found one I liked. Changed the lighting several times and did macro shots of all angles, about 30 photos in all until I got the perfect shot to paint. Never realized how many colors and textures there are in a mushroom. I think I captured it. Aren’t they funny little things? Tasted good too! Well…maybe not these.

Still Life / Delicious Series When I saw these chocolate donuts I knew they would be a great subject. The light was hitting the chocolate just right. I set my camera on macro to see how close I could get and to see how big the sprinkles would be. It struck me funny that the sprinkles looked like they were jumping into the hole.
